I am a physician in my last year of residency training in Medical Oncology at the University of Manitoba. I chose medicine, and cancer care specifically, because I enjoy the challenge of finding beauty in difficult situations. The experiences I have had caring for patients, have impacted me in a tremendous and humbling way - keeping me motivated to study, learn and search for ways to do my part in making the world a better place.
What TED talk do you think everybody should watch?
I am excited for so many reasons! Sharing ideas with fellow Manitobans is the biggest one though. I am very excited to see what kind of impact the other speakers will have on my view of the world, and I am excited to see how my idea affects the views of others.
What is your idea worth spreading?
Psychotherapist Irvin Yalom wrote that a tremendous amount of energy is spent in our lives in the denial of death. I wonder what would happen if we could use this energy for another purpose? What if we could take the energy spent on the fear and anxiety of dying, and use it to improve our own lives and the lives of others?
Connection, understanding, iteration and illumination.
What do you do for a living, and why?
I just click things. I play with technology for a living and and teach and talk about it in the media. If I had a label it would say "creative technologist". I have a small lab where we build cool things and tell stories. I'm simply driven to do all these things because I can. I'm also a technology entertainer, and I think if someone tells you there's a difference between entertainment and education, then they don't know the first thing about either. I also love my work/play.

Why are you excited to speak at TEDxManitoba?
I grew up in Winnipeg, but have been living in Vancouver for the last 20 years. I am super excited to be coming home to play.
What is your idea worth sharing?
The joy of clicking. I strongly believe the web is an extended human nervous system and that we are all connected within it.
I am excited to host because TEDxManitoba creates a room full of excitement, knowledge, and sharing.
What is your idea worth spreading?
My idea is sharing the ideas of all the speakers! As a host, my job is to feed the mind-spinning that happens between speakers, and to keep that intrigue, discussion and momentum going.
