5 Quick Questions with MCs Greg Mackling and Chuck LaFleche

Greg Mackling is an on-air personality on CJOB Radio (Co-Host of The Health Report, Sunday Morning Hockey, Show, Jory Capital’s Independent Research, Talk to The Experts), host of “In Conversation” on SHAW TV Winnipeg, and Special Projects Officer at St. Boniface Hospital Foundation. But beyond all that, he is the husband of Jackie, father of Brendan and Alexander and a self-described “Born and Bred/thrice re-patriated Winnipegger and Proud Manitoban.” We’re looking forward to him and Chuck LaFleche as our MCs for TEDxManitoba 2012.

What motivates you?

I remember doing interviews as a restaurant manager, years ago. One of the questions I would like to ask was, “what makes you tick?”.

Early in our lives, I think that question is difficult to answer, if not impossible. Which is why I always had a special affection for those who could AT LEAST attempt to answer the question.

As the father of five year old twin boys, the easy answer is that my children motivate me; which is only part of the actual answer.

The things which bring me the greatest satisfaction involve the joy of others. The reward of a job well done is satisfying, personally, but doesn’t hold the same esteem without somebody else appreciating and or acknowledging your or their efforts.

I most motivated when there is a task up for grabs that nobody else wants to tackle, or everybody else thinks can’t be done.

In short, which is a challenge in itself for me, I am motivated by witnessing, contributing to, or acknowledging the impossible.

Stretching boundries, my own, and others’ is very motivating… let’s figure out the next thing we CAN’T do, and do IT!!

What do you do for a living and why?

I am fortunate to share my time between three extremely rewarding “jobs”.

First and foremost I am a father and a husband, My family is by far the most important “thing” to me, and it is always the first factor in any calculation as to whether or not any other “opportunities” are truly that.

Secondly, I work in the media. Mostly radio, and now some television. It is what I had always dreamed of as a child, but didn’t sink my teeth into until I had turned 40. It is a gift to communicate en masse with the freedom to the share stories with the public, with my own curiosity attached.

And last, but not least, I represent the St Boniface Hospital Foundation. This is a perfect melding of my first two jobs. Not only do I co-host the Health Report, with Chuck LaFleche, President and CEO of the Foundation, but I am working in the community to bring awareness of the spectacular work done at the hospital and research centre. In doing so, I am trying to find unique opportunities for business and individuals to contribute required funds to ensure world class patient care and research takes place at St.B.

All three a true gift, which are inter-twined; I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Which TED talk do you think everyone should watch?

Adora Svitak’s What adults can learn from kids.

Why are you excited to MC for TEDxManitoba?

Where else do we have an opportunity to share “ideas WORTH spreading?”

Manitoba is home to great inventors, innovation, imagination, and inspiration.

It is my honour to be considered worthy of introducing, these speakers who have quite possibly the ability to bring forward the “NEXT THING WE CAN’T DO” in Manitoba… and show us how to DO IT!

What is your idea worth spreading?

My idea worth spreading is that we are in the business of shocking the world, in Manitoba.

We are proving to rest of the planet that we can fight Mother Nature with ingenuity, we can progress as a Society and not leave others behind, and for me as a thrice re-patrioated Manitoban, that you CAN come home again.

We are capable of doing all the things everybody else says we can’t, and too many cases WE say we can’t.

What is the NEXT THING WE CAN’T DO in Manitoba?

Before becoming President & CEO of the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation in 2010, Chuck LaFleche held a variety of positions, including as a controller at a large credit union and a professor at a business college, Founder and CEO of a computerized accounting consulting company, and Founder of Momentum Healthware. Chuck holds a BA from the University of Saint- Boniface, and a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Manitoba. Chuck sits on the QHR Technologies, Inc. board in Kelowna, BC, on the Advisory Board for the NRC Institute for Information Technology in Fredericton, NB, and the St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre Enterprise Committee.

What motivates you?

Learning, but especially about history, sharing knowledge and making people laugh.

What do you do for a living and why?

I am President and CEO of the St-Boniface Hospital. This is a very unique position where I get to use my skill set to plan and organize the raising of funds from very generous people in Manitoba and see those funds used for very innovative life changing care and research at the St-Boniface Hospital. What could be more fulfilling than that?

Which TED talk do you think everyone should watch?

Sir Ken Robinson’s Bring on the revolution.

Why are you excited to speak at TEDxManitoba?

Simply being a part of TEDxManitoba is an honour.
